Commencement — You Are the Class of Hope
From childhood, milestones fuel our imaginations. We practice our game-winning grand slam in the World Series, or our shock and awe when we hear our name called at the Academy Awards. Graduation Day is one of those milestones. Students dream of being surrounded by friends and family who will proudly bear witness as they walk across a stage in cap and gown, a diploma traded for a handshake, and a cap tossed high into the sky. Unfortunately, last year the pandemic left us scrambling to honor UCLA's students virtually. This spring, restrictions eased enough for students to bring two loved ones with them as they crossed a stage in Drake Stadium. Following are ways in which Alumni Affairs helped students celebrate the beginning of the next chapter in their story.

First Gen Graduation Celebration and Toast
UCLA Alumni First-Gen Network
A first-generation student is a scholar from any background, age or ethnicity who is the first in their family to attend college. Despite academic ability and competitiveness, First Gen students can be challenged by expectations, jargon, policies and procedures, leading to struggles in confidence and belonging. The First Gen Network provides a community of support that will continue after graduation and mentor and advocate on behalf of first-generation students. Listen to the inspirational words and wisdom of Julie Le as she graduates with a master's degree in student affairs from the School of Education and Information Studies.
